GS: Spectator

v13 and v14. Free

See through the perspective of another and never miss a moment.

While dynamic lighting and vision helps people feel immersed in your campaign, it can equally feel annoying when the gamemaster is describing what one player is seeing while the rest have their vision cut off or are in a different room. This module aims to solve this by allowing players to spectate each other as well as other NPCs within the world at the gamemaster's discretion. With an easy-to-use party strip and simple click and button controls, your players will never miss a scene regardless of what broom closet their actual characters may be hiding in.

The header

The picker's header has buttons for search, the viewport director, the party strip and settings.

The search matches letters in order: gwi finds Grave Warden Ilse. The sort button orders the scene list by valid targets, name or disposition. The magnifying glass shows or hides the search box and the sort button.

The camera button opens the viewport director. The button to the left of the gear shows or hides the party strip. The gear opens the module settings.

The picker fades a second after the mouse leaves it. It returns to full opacity when the mouse is back over it.

The party

The party is listed first and stays at the top while the scene list scrolls.

Click a row to spectate that token. You see the scene with its vision, lighting and fog. Vision from the other tokens you own is switched off. The camera follows the token. Roofs above it fade so you can see inside.

The GM gets three buttons on each row. Focus makes every player spectate the token for five seconds by default. The party button adds or removes a party member. The eye sets whether players may spectate the token. When they may not, the row is greyed. A fourth button opens the token's ring options when Customise ring per token is on.

Each player's party strip shows these tokens, minus any that player may not spectate.

The scene

Every other token on the scene is listed below the party.

On Foundry VTT v14, the list includes tokens on other floors. Spectating one takes you to its floor. When you stop, you go back to the floor you were on.

Players see only the tokens they may spectate. By default, that means player-owned tokens and no NPCs. The Allow spectating NPC tokens setting lets them spectate NPCs. The eye on each row allows or denies one NPC at a time.

Drag the picker's corner to resize it. It snaps to the screen edges and to Foundry VTT's panels.

The party strip

Every player gets a draggable row of the party's portraits.

Click a portrait to spectate that character. Click it again to stop. A ring marks the portrait of the token you are spectating.

With Auto on, you spectate whoever's turn it is in combat. Creatures you may not spectate are skipped.

The return timer

After you pan away, a timer counts down before the camera returns to the token.

The timer appears on the party strip when you pan away. It starts once you stop panning. It lasts fifteen seconds by default.

Click the bar or press Space to pause it. Click the seconds to change how long it lasts. Escape ends the timer and returns the camera. Press Escape again to stop spectating.

The viewport director

The GM frames part of the map and shows it to every player.

Open it from the camera button in the picker's header. Drag the frame to move it, or drag a corner to resize it. The frame is always 16:9, the shape of most screens.

Show sends what is inside the frame to every player. The button's label then changes to Live. While live, moving the frame moves their cameras. Press Live again, or close the frame, to give everyone their camera back.

Floor steps through the scene's floors with its down and up arrows. While live, the players see the floor you are viewing. Floor is hidden on a scene with one floor.

With no vision mode on, the players see what the party can see. GM vision shows the frame with no token vision masking it. Hidden tokens stay hidden.

Ghost vision puts a pair of eyes in the middle of the frame. The players see what those eyes can see. Walls block their sight. Turning one mode on turns the other off.

With a vision mode on and nothing live, the word Preview appears. The mode then applies to your canvas alone. You can check how it looks before you press Show.
